Lincoln's election resulted in the secession of southern states. The Civil War and restoring peace and pulling the Union together became Lincoln's goal. He has been considered by many as one of the best US Presidents in history. His assassination in 1865 brought the newly restored country together and began the beginning of the idea of the US becoming a Federalist nation.
